United Healthcare Covers Gastric Sleeve

by Kerri Seidler on November 6, 2009 · Comments | Weight Loss Surgery

Gastric SleeveUnited Healthcare (UHC), one of the largest health carriers in the United States, has changed its bariatric medical policy to include coverage for gastric sleeve surgery. The new policy, which went into effect October 1, 2009, is a significant event for bariatric surgery patients and gastric sleeve advocates.

UHC’s decision reflects a fundamental change in their position on the effectiveness of the gastric sleeve procedure. They no longer refer to the gastric sleeve as an “experimental” procedure in their health plans, but as a “proven” treatment for clinically severe obesity. This recognition makes United Healthcare the first major insurer to cover the gastric sleeve as a complete bariatric surgical option.

Not only does this new policy have the potential to affect the more than 20 million individuals covered by United Healthcare, but their decision could influence other insurers to cover the gastric sleeve as well.

Gastric Bypass Surgery Increases Anemia Risk

by Kerri Seidler on October 15, 2009 · Comments | Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric Bypass Anemia RiskNutritional supplements may not be enough to avoid iron deficiency and anemia after gastric bypass surgery. According to a new study it appears that low iron levels in some gastric bypass patients may not be due to a reduced iron intake, but to the body’s inability to absorb iron after gastro-intestinal alteration.

The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Chile in Santiago, followed 67 Chilean women who had undergone gastric bypass surgery. All of the women were given vitamin and mineral supplements after surgery; some of the women were given an additional iron supplement.

Even with the recommended supplementation, however, more than one third of the women developed anemia within 18 months of having gastric bypass surgery.

The ZERONA procedure utilizes a FDA approved cold laser technology that melts away excess fat and contours the body without surgery, medications, incisions, scars, bruising, pain, or recovery time. The laser, which feels gently warm to the touch, penetrates fat cells and causes them to leak out fat, which is then removed from the body during the normal course of detoxification.

Weight Loss Surgery Reduces Childhood Obesity

by Kerri Seidler on September 1, 2009 · Comments | Weight Loss Surgery

WLS PregnancyWeight loss surgery can provide lasting health benefits to children of post-bariatric mothers. A newly released study has shown that obese women who underwent weight loss surgery and lost weight prior to becoming pregnant reduced the risk of obesity in their children.

Women who are severely obese and want to have children are often advised on the benefits of having weight loss surgery before having children. Losing weight before pregnancy can make the experience safer for both mother and child by reducing the risk of pregnancy-related complications in post-bariatric women compared morbidly obese women.

This new study, which will appear in the November 2009 issue of Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM), shows that the benefits to children extend well beyond pregnancy and can affect a child’s health and risk of obesity throughout life.
