© daVinci System 2009 Intuitive SurgicalThe excitement is growing for robot-assisted bariatric surgery, as both surgeons and patients continue to report the many benefits from the newest advancement in minimally invasive surgery. This leading-edge technology, the second generation da Vinci Surgical System, is a computer-enhanced device that places a computer between the surgeon’s hands and the surgical instruments.

The system does not perform the surgery on it’s own, but replicates the movements of the surgeon via remote control. During surgery, the surgeon sits at a monitor and console in the operating room while instructing four robotic arms to carry out the procedure. One of the robotic arms holds a high resolution, three dimensional endoscopic camera and the other three arms are equipped with complex micro-instruments.

The da Vinci System was developed by Intuitive Surgical, who has worked with NASA on developing capability to operate on astronauts in space and the Department of Defense for operating on soldiers in the battlefield. The system was designed to increase survival rate of wounded soldiers and other patients in remote locations, as well as enhance surgical outcomes and minimize the possibility of human error during surgery. The technology is now benefiting many patients worldwide as it is being applied to a wide range of common surgical procedures, most recently gastric bypass surgery.

The system benefits both surgeons and patients. With the da Vinci Surgical System, surgeons are able to operate with better visualization, greater surgical precision, improved dexterity, increased range of motion, and greater access. The system offers many potential benefits to patients as well, including less pain, less blood loss, less scarring, less risk of infection, a shorter hospital stay, a faster recovery, and a quicker return to normal daily activities.

While surgery does not come without risk, it is exciting when advancements are made that improve patient experience. As the outcome of bariatric surgery varies between patients and procedures, ask your bariatric surgeon about the potential risks and benefits that may apply in your personal situation.
