Lap Band Surgery in MexicoWith the high cost of medical care in the United States, many Americans are crossing the border and paying a lot less for surgery. Mexico is one of the most popular destinations, especially for lap band surgery, where the cost is roughly half of what it would cost to have the procedure done here in the United States. To pay less than $10,000 for everything, including travel, is enticing, especially compared to the $20,000 to $30,000 it would cost for the same surgery here at home.

Traveling outside the country for medical care is increasing in popularity, giving many people the opportunity to have surgery that they couldn’t afford otherwise. Many people have to pay for lap band surgery out-of-pocket, either because they don’t have health insurance or their policy won’t pay for the procedure. In some cases, the approval process and waiting time is simply too time consuming and frustrating.

It seems the advantages of going to Mexico for lap-band surgery are clear, saving time and waiting less. But are there any disadvantages? Before you get up and go, there are some important factors to consider.

Going to Mexico for Lap-Band Surgery?

  • Check the credentials of the bariatric surgeon. What is their training, experience, reputation?
  • Find out if the procedure is being performed in a hospital or clinic. Are you comfortable with the level of medical care available in the event of an unexpected problem?
  • Before you travel, make arrangements with a local doctor for follow-up care. Some doctors do not accept new patients if they had surgery performed by another doctor. Do not wait until there is a problem to try to find an appropriate medical provider.
  • What about your fills? Will you be traveling to Mexico for adjustments and check-ups?
  • While this is not the right time to plan a vacation trip, you will want to bring a travel buddy to help you out. Do you have your passports to get back home?
  • Will you be driving or flying? Does the medical facility provide transportation to and from airport? Do they provide hotel accommodations (for you and a guest)?
  • What pre-op and post-op testing is performed? Is it included in the cost?

Many people have been happy with their decision to have lap band surgery in Mexico, but only you can decide if it is right for you. Once you consider the pros and cons, you will be better prepared to make an informed decision.
